Each year the Jenny Lin Foundation awards two scholarships established in memory of Jenny. During her life, Jenny demonstrated a gift for making friends, excelling in school, and learning and appreciating music. The Foundation established these scholarships to encourage students to strive for excellence in music and academics in the way Jenny did.

The Foundation will also consider applications of scholarships or sponsorship for young talented music students within the greater San Francisco Bay Area on a case by case basis. Applications must be related to academic and musical enrichment purposes.

Jenny Lin Music Scholarship – Most Promising Musician

Frequency of Scholarship: Awarded annually at the Castro Valley Winter Concert

Eligibility: All 6-12th grade Castro Valley students participating in the Castro Valley Unified School District (CVUSD) Music Program

Selection Criteria: This scholarship is designed to encourage budding musicians to continue their pursuits in learning a new instrument. The student should show dedication and enthusiasm when learning music and participating in group music events and show progressive improvement in playing a particular instrument.

Procedure: Music teachers in the Castro Valley music program should submit nominations to the designated director(s) of the CVUSD music program four weeks before the concert. The director(s) will select the award recipient and make recommendation to the Foundation two weeks before the concert. The Foundation will make the final approval and inform the director one week before the concert.

Award Amount and Usage: $300 towards private music lessons

Award Presentation: The award will be presented to the recipient at the annual Winter Concert by a Foundation officer.

Dispersal of Funds: The student selected must provide the Jenny Lin Foundation with the name of his/her private music teacher whereupon the Foundation will issue a check to this teacher.


Jenny Lin Award for Academic and Musical Achievement

Frequency of Award: Awarded annually at the Castro Valley Middle School Graduation

Eligibility: Eighth graders graduating from one of the Castro Valley Middle Schools

Selection Criteria:

  • Academic: GPA 3.75 or above. The student should demonstrate consistent academic excellence in all subjects as well as an eagerness for learning and helping others to learn.
  • Music: The student should have a record of musical achievement and excellent performance in the Castro Valley music program.

Procedure:  Teachers at Castro Valley Middle School should submit nominations for students who meet the academic criteria to the music director four weeks before the graduation. This director will then select the student best meets the musical criteria, and make recommendation to the Foundation two weeks before the graduation. The Foundation will make final approval and inform the school official one week before the graduation.

Award Amount and Usage: $300 towards private music lessons

Award Presentation: The award will be presented at the Castro Valley Middle School Graduation by a Foundation officer.
